VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, STATE ENTERPRISE (VV) and SLOVENSKÝ VODOHOSPODÁRSKY PODNIK, state enterprise (SVP), have succeeded in obtaining a grant from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism to realise a project that will help to improve the condition of wetlands and restore the natural biotopes of the wetlands of the floodplain forests in the left-hand branch system of the Danube River. In practice, this will be achieved by rebuilding two lines of overflow dikes in the river arm system, which will improve the dynamics of water flow in the affected area. These measures will also contribute to better water distribution to the wetlands, which have irreplaceable roles in the context of a changing climate.
The goal of the project is to improve the condition and restoration of natural biotopes of floodplain forest wetlands in the area of the Danube branch system in the areas of the Baka, Bodíky and Gabčíkovo branches. The rebuilding of the affected G and H lines to higher flows will allow higher flow dynamics as well as the necessary dynamics of water level changes in the area, which will have the effect of improving the condition of the existing wetland ecosystem. The project area belongs to the list of Ramsar Sites – Ramsar Site Dunajské luhy.
The Project „Improving the condition of selected wetlands in the left-hand branch system of the Danube River“ benefits from a € 429 244 grant from Norway through the Norway Grants. The project has been co-financed from the State Budget of the Slovak Republic in the amount of € 75 749.
VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, STATE ENTERPRISE, applied in March 2021 for a project grant from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 and the State Budget of the Slovak Republic under the programme SK-Climate and submitted an application for the project “Improving the condition of selected wetlands in the left-hand branch system of the Danube River” under the Open Call for applications for the project “Restoration of degraded wetland ecosystems” (ClimaLocal) no. 4 (code ACC04). The project application was approved by the Decision of the Minister of Environment of the Slovak Republic on 26.10.2021 on the basis of the recommendation of the selection committee for the SK-Climate programme. The project contract between the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic and VV was signed on 21.02.2022.
